Caching an index

Database: Oracle 8.1.7 Can an index be cached?

Caching is a method of loading the contents of an object in Memory for instanct access, and preventing multiple disk reads. This is normally done for objects where the hits are high.

Yes. Caching option was not available for index in earlier versions of Oracle. It is now available from release 8 onwards. BUFFER_POOL is an additional storage clause wherein you specify how you want to cache the index.
